Childproofing Gadgets

What are the most important childproofing gadgets for the new parent to buy? There are many products on the market today for childproofing, and some are not quite as good as others. Remember when buying childproofing gadgets that your child’s health and safety are at risk. This is not the place to cut corners!

The most fundamental childproofing product is a cabinet lock. A cabinet lock is used to secure the cabinets in your kitchen and bathroom that you do not want your child to have access to. For example, if you store household chemicals underneath your sink, then you need a lock for this cabinet to keep your child from accidentally ingesting these deadly chemicals. Do you have a cabinet where sharp utensils are kept? Again, this cabinet needs a lock. Locks that the child cannot break or figure out are essential.

Another aspect of childproofing your home is open doors, there are doors you don’t want your child to open. You can buy door knob covers that will keep your baby’s little hands from being able to grasp the door knob and open the door. These are placed over the doorknob and require a firm grasp to open. Many parents place these on the doors of cabinets that have breakable or dangerous items inside, or on the doors to the outside.

Outlets are another place where your child could get hurt or even be killed. When your child starts exploring the world as a crawler and then a toddler, she/he will become fascinated by every detail, including those tiny holes in the wall that you know as outlets. You can buy plastic covers that will keep your baby from playing with these outlets. Likewise, power strips are quite dangerous for babies. You can either place the power strips out of the child’s reach, or you can buy power strips with baby safety mechanisms built in that do not allow a child to stick an object inside the outlets.

Now look at your stove. Do you think your baby is strong enough to turn the dials that turn on the stove? If they are at counter height, you need to cover them with something that will keep your baby from turning on the stove. You also may want to buy a lock for your oven to keep your baby from being burned when the oven is on.

If you have furniture with sharp corners, your baby could be hurt or killed if they hit their head on these corners when learning how to walk. Consider buying corner covers that make these corners less blunt. Your baby will be protected, and so will your furniture. Avoid putting heavy objects on a level of your home where your child could reach them and pull them down on themselves. With these tips and childproofing products, your home will be a safe haven for your baby.
